Balancing Mind and Body

WHO MOVED MY CHEESE? BY SPENCER JOHNSON

Who Moved My Cheese?

Who Moved My Cheese? is a thought-provoking book that reads more like a pamphlet. Sometimes we overcomplicate things, but this book is a reminder that simplicity is best in most scenarios. The use of cartoonish characters and basic language is one such example. WMMC can help you navigate through many of life’s obstacles with anticipation and awareness by holding you accountable for your actions in a nonjudgmental way.

WMMC starts with four characters and one major life obstacle. They have a mound of cheese that disappears. Two of the characters are left baffled and demand justice. The other two characters waste no time in search of more cheese. In the end, one character was forced to step out of his comfort zone in order not to starve to death.

The first set of characters are comfortable and used to things being a certain way without much effort. The cheese was constantly replenished; therefore, they always ate well. Then one day, the cheese ran out and they were outraged. They demanded to know who moved their cheese. They returned to the mound every day in hopes that the cheese would return. Unfortunately for them, the cheese never came back and hard decisions needed to be made.

Unlike the first set of characters, the second set of characters were more practical and less emotional. They noticed that the cheese supply was dwindling and prepared for the cheese to run out. As soon as the cheese was gone, so were they. These characters began seeking out new cheese, even though they didn’t know where to look for it. They knew that waiting for the cheese to return would waste valuable time that they didn’t have.

From this story, we’ve learned there will always be unexpected life events that will happen, while others can be anticipated. By having a backup plan, savings, or the ability to pivot, we can save ourselves from hitting rock bottom. Many things appear to happen without warning when, in actuality, we just became complacent and hoped for the best instead of being proactive. This book also showcases how one’s attitude can attract or deflect a desirable outcome. We have control over how we react to things. If we become complacent, life has a way of shaking things up in order for us to grow. Audio Player
